要 旨
There was nothing but chaos, confusion, panicky, fear, despair among the public of the Andaman - Nicobar Islands of India after the 26 December 2004 killer and the second largest earthquake in the history of seismology after the 1960 great Chilean earthquake (Mw 9.5). There was a lack of awareness from earthquake and tsuamis among Indian Islanders in comparison to those of other earthquake prone countries of the world. Sufferers in this Islands were wandering heather and thither to know whether any possibility of future strong shaking and tsunamis in Andaman-Nicobar Islands. There were several unanswered questions to them like: would the Islands submerge into the Bay of Bengal? Is any possibility for future volcanic eruptions? What is the future of the Islands? People were in position of fleeing the Islands because of several misinformation and misinterpretation of earthquake processes as they were confused with several unauthentic propagandas propagated by some of fortune tellers on the future occurrence of earthquakes. At this need of hour a candid and plausible explanation of earthquake genesis and the future possibility of tsunamis by the seismologist in a common language rather than mathematical expression are of great help and such effort is most warranted for the scientists to the society. A seismological team deputed by the Geological Survey of India, the first scientific team that arrived the affected regions, has played a significant role on discharging a challenging mission of acquiring useful and potential aftershock data under arduous condition, which constituted an important input for reducing the public panicky in Andaman-Nicobar Islands during the chaos of Sumatra-Andaman earthquake (Mw 9.3), which will be discussed at the time of presentation.
