要 旨
Mantle convection and plate tectonics are two aspects of a single,
complex system that is both thermal and chemical, involving interplays
between multiple rheological behaviors and the complementary processes
of chemical differentiation and mixing. This talk will focus on two
steps towards the development of an integrated numerical model of these
processes. Firstly, comparisons between numerical simulations and
seismic observations are used to constrain the amount of compositional
layering that could be present in the deep mantle, finding that a deep
(i.e., ~1000 km thick) layer is ruled out. Secondly, the importance of
the finite strength of rocks on the formation of plate tectonics on
Earth is investigated, finding that its inclusion into 3-D numerical
models leads to a reasonable first order approximation of plate
tectonics behavior. Models that combine plate formation with
geochemical differentiation and evolution are presently being
developed.
