"Effect of densification on pressure-transmitting efficiency of
pyrophyllite gaskets"

Pyrophyllite is widely used both as the gasket material and as the
pressure transmitting medium, especially for the large volume press. In
my Master course study, we found that the pressure-transmitting
efficiency of pyrophyllite is improved by change density and strength of
the pyrophyllite. The results showed that pyrophyllite was fully
densified when the pressure reached to about 1 GPa. On the hinge-cage
cubic press, the press load for Ba I-II transition (5.5GPa) in the cubic
large volume pressure cell is reduced more than 8 × 105 N by using the
densified pyrophyllite, compared with the unprecompresssd pyrophyllite.
We report that the cell pressure versus press load still keeps good
linearity at cell pressures up to 5.5 GPa, and the press load
utilization efficiency is improved above 15% for the cubic press system
when the precompressed pyrophyllite is used as the pressure-transmitting
medium and gasket material. We also analyzed the forming of gasket by
Bridgman high-pressure principles. The analysis of gasket shows that the
formed gasket determines pressure-transmitting efficiency of
pressure-transmitting medium, and the pressure gradient of gasket
decides the pressure plateau.
