"Spin state of ferric iron in Mg-perovskite up to 200 GPa by X-ray emission spectroscopy"

要 旨
  Spin transition of iron in the Earth's interior has large effects on the dynamics of the Earth's interior. The theoretical studies on spin transition of iron in the Earth's interior have been already reported in 1960's and 1970's. However, its experimental studies were reported only recently. Among those reports on the lower mantle minerals, the reports on ferropericlase show the consistent results, while the reports on Mg-perovskite are inconsistent with each other and the matter of controversy. The most of inconsistency seems to originate from the poor qualities and/or poor characterizations of the measured samples. We could perform the spin state measurement of ferric iron in Mg-perovskite up to 200 GPa by X-ray emission spectroscopy using the well-qualified samples. In the talk, I will introduce our recent results on these experiments and discuss about the possible spin state of ferric iron in Mg-perovskite in the lower mantle.
