要 旨
Gas hydrate is a clathrate compound, which is composed of host cages formed by hydrogen-bonded water molecules and of guests included in the cages. Methane hydrate is a well-known gas hydrate as “burning ice”, and is expected as a clean and fruitful energy resource for the next generation. On the other hand, methane is a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide at causing global warming. Looking towards the solar system, methane hydrate is thought to be an important constituent of outer giant planets and their satellites, such as Uranus, Neptune, and Titan. Recent experimental and theoretical studies have clarified various structural changes and also hidden physical properties of gas hydrates under high pressure. In this seminar, the following topics will be introduced; The interests of clathrate hydrates on material and planetary sciences; An outline of structural changes depending on pressure and guest size; Why gas hydrates change their structure?; Outstanding high-pressure stability of methane hydrate; High-pressure properties of solid methane, an important cosmic ice. Finally, a wide variety of states of gas hydrates and ices in the solar system and space is displayed, and its implication for planetary science is shown as a future perspective.
