"Breakdown of majoritic garnet: mineral structure versus mineral chemistry"

要 旨
Pilot disequilibrium experiments (10 GPa, 1450 , 6 h) performed to breakdown
synthetic mantle transition zone garnet with a majoritic mineral chemistry
(55% majorite in solid solution) formed new majoritic garnet (50% majorite
in solid solution) and tschermakitic pyroxene suggesting the breakdown
of the garnet structure precedes that of the garnet's majorite chemistry.
By implication, preservation of natural majoritic garnet is controlled
not by decompression rates than those factors that control mineral chemical
diffusion, mainly temperature, cooling rates and water content.
