要 旨
There have been some controversy on the composition of the deeper part of the mantle, although the upper mantle is generally accepted to be of pyrolitic or peridotitic. A range of chemical compositions, such as pyrolite, chondrite, piclogite, and perovskitite are proposed for the mantle transition region and the lower mantle, based mainly on cosmochemical and geochemical grounds. These candidates should be tested independently by a combination of seismological observations and mineral physics, but the key mineral physics parameters that are needed to constrain seismic velocity and density profiles for such regions have been very limited until recently. We have extended pressure ranges for the accurate velocity/density measurements towards those of the upper part of the lower mantle by developing high-pressure techniques combined with synchrotron radiation, ultrasonic, and sintered diamond (SD) anvil experiments. Some implications for the compositions of the mantle transition region and of the upper part of the lower mantle are discussed on the basis of recent experimental data obtained by the GRC high-pressure experiment group.
