Reproducing plate tectonics in the mantle convection system is an important
issue in the numerical studies of mantle convection. We have developed
self-consistent dynamical models of 2-D plate-mantle convection coupled
system to examine the dynamics of initiation and longevity of the plate
subduction at the continent-ocean or ocean-ocean boundary. We focus our
attentions on the effect of: (1) the strength of the plate; (2) age of
subducting plate; (3) existence of the asthenosphere. We use history-dependent
yielding to realize finite deformation at the plate boundary. This results
in the subduction-like one-sided structure as well as by introducing heterogeneity
of the surface layer (i.e., continental and oceanic lithospheres). Details
of the results and their geophysical implications will be discussed at
the seminar.
