要　旨
　For the last half century, most igneous petrologists had thought that primitive magmas from the depth of the earth contain all the necessary information about the partial melting process in the source region and the compositions of these magmas provide important means to constrain the composition nature of the upper mantle. However, this would not be correct if there were a component which does not already enter the magma but does strongly affect the melt composition. Cr2O3 is right such a component. Using some specially designed experimental techniques to overcome the experimental difficulties which prevented other scientists gaining useful knowledge, we successfully studied the effect of Cr2O3 on the partial melting process of the upper mantle for the first time. Our results suggest that the traditional view mentioned above needs a revolution.
